Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
a) All ages, young and old
b)Male and female
c)They were there indefinitely because they didn't have the money to support themselves!. The workhouse offered them shelter and food (though the standards were appalling) because they couldn't afford these things themselves and in return they worked long hours in terrible conditions!.
d)Men and women were kept seperate even if they were married!.
e)They were there because they were too poor to support themselves outside the workhouse!. They couldn't afford a home, food, to pay bills etc so they went to the workhouse!. Most adults ended up there through job loss, disability, lack of job opportunities, bad pay!. Children were often born into the workhouse!. If their mother died in childbirth and there was no other family to care for the child (as in Oliver Twist) then the child went to the workhouse and was raised by the other women there!.
f)Many people died in the workhouse!. Conditions were terrible and many died of poor health, malnourishment, and various other illnesses caused by the terrible living and working conditions!. Those who did escape the workhouse were intergrated back into the general community!.
