None in the true sense of the word!. In general, Europe united against the French from July 1789 until the summer of 1815!. There were French sympathisers is most European countries, including Great Britain and the United Kingdom after 1801!. Some of the great English poets hailed the French Revolution as a triumph for commonsense and the common people!. However, the excesses of the Terror 1791-93 soon dispelled that belief and Europe united as a continent against the French!.

Paradoxically, the principal revolution to grow out of 1789 was the Slaves Revolution in Haiti during 1797-1802!. Taking up the principles and beliefs of the French Revolution, Toussaint L'Ouverture led the massive slave population to freedom and began to rebuild the country!. However, the Napoleonic army invaded Haiti, captured L'Ouverture, transported him and his family to Paris, where he died under interrogation in 1803, allegedly of pneumonia!. So much for liberty, equality and fraternity!.

In many ways, the French Revolution of 1789 was the first act of a gradual modernisation of France that required the later "revolutions" of 1830, 1848 and 1871!. Each of these later French "revolutions" (actually, just political adjustments) raised other revolutions across Europe in Belgium, Holland, Austria and especially in Germany and Italy, which became unified recognisable nations for the first time in 1871!.

When Chairman Mao was asked in the 1950s what he thought had been the consequences of the French Revolution, he replied, "It is too soon to tell!." That's probably still the case!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
