That hot bed of Religious Dissension Rhode Island in 1774 (before being a State arguably) has the honor or dishonor depending on your attitude toward Slavery (and trust me a lot of people on Yahoo Answers support Slavery - - - twice I have had answers deleted because I called Jefferson Davis a traitor)!.!.!.

I thought all states had to abolish slavery at once after the Civil War!.

President Lincoln gave his Emancipation Proclamation speech right after the war!.

Technically, the first state was Pennsylvania in 1780!. Vermont was a territory, not a state, when it abolished slavery in 1777!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
