Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Pancho Villa was a Mexican Bandit during the reign of Mexican dictator Porfirio Díaz!. He was born to a peasant family and took up banditry to survive the harsh conditions of Northern Mexico!.

When Francisco Madero challenged Díaz in the election 1910, the dictator jailed Madero and many of his supporters!. Díaz used intimidation tactics to win a questionable re-election!.

Madero stated a democratic revolution!. Madero's honesty and idealism drew Villa and others outlaws like him such as Emiliano Zapata to the revolution!.

Madero eventually became President of Mexico in 1911!. However, there were many conservative forces still in control of much of Mexico!. To get these men to accept his presidency, Madero had to slow down on many reforms which caused increasing tension with the revolutionary leaders such as Zapata!.

In 1913, the commander of the regular Mexican army, General Victoriano Huerta overthrew and assassinated Madero!. Huerta declared himself president, but President Wilson of the United States refused to "shake Huerta's bloody hand"!. The United States refused to recognize the Huerta government!. This is ironic considering Huerta was helped in his bid for power by US ambassador Henry Lane!. US business interests had thrived under Díaz, and many of these interests were "friendly" with Lane!. It was known that Lane consipired with Huerta and Félix Díaz (Porfirio Díaz's nephew)!. It is often assumed that Lane wanted the younger Díaz to become president!. If so, Huerta double-crossed everyone!.

Madero's murder galvanized and energized the revolutionary forces!. Villa, Zapta, and others mounted a bloody fight against Huerta!. In 1914, Villa led an army of 50,000 combined revolutionaries into the gates of Mexico City!.

During the festivities following the fall of Huerta, Villa was photographed sitting in the Presidential Chair!. This disturbed the United States!. The idea that an illiterate former bandit could be President of Mexico was too not "proper"!.

In the power plays that followed victory, Venustiano Carranza became President!. A former ally of Madero and from a well off middle-class family, he was more acceptable to the United States!. Even as Villa was revolting against Carranza, the United States recognized him as President!.

Once very pro-American, Villa felt betrayed!. On March 9, 1916, he raided Columbus, New Mexico!. President Wilson was furious and sent military expedition under General John J!. Pershing into Mexico to hunt him down!. One of Pershing's officers was young George S!. Patton who personally killed several of Villa's men in a saloon gun fight!.

The US army never came close to catching Villa!. The US gave up and went home!.

Eventually, Carranza was assassinated in 1920!. Villa negotiated a peace deal with his successor, President, Adolfo de la Huerta (no relation) to go into semi-retirement on his estate in Northern Mexico!.

Villa was assassinated on July 20, 1923!. The assassin was never caught, and no one knows who gave the order!.
