As far as I can make out, the Phantom of the Opera is set in Paris in about 1881!. This was when France had become a Republic again, and was recovering from the terrible Siege of Paris in 1871!.

People of all classes would have enjoyed eating out, French restaurants have always been accesible to anyone who could pay for them!. The wealthy would enjoy elaborate meals of many courses, but the middle class, lawyers, doctors, teachers, tradesmen etc, would also have eaten quite well!. Even poor people would have done the best they could to cook good food from what was available!. The French were great wine drinkers, and poorer people would also have enjoyed beer!.

People of all classes would have enjoyed going to the theatre and the music hall, and going out to eat, and dancing, and enjoying boating on the river, which was a popular activity with people of all classes at that time!. Take a look at Renoir's wonderful painting The Luncheon of the Boating Party, which was painted in 1881, the year Phantom of the Opera is set in, for a very good idea of what people at that time wearing, and how they were enjoying themselves!. 'Dance at Bougivil' by the same artist is another great painting that gives a glimpse into the lives of ordinary people enjoying themselves!.

The 1880s was the decade when Impressionism was creating a stir in France, and Impressionist painting can give a very good feel of the period, the paintings of Monet, Renoir and Degas are all good works to look at for an idea of the atmosphere of the 1880s!. Manet's last great painting The Bar at the Folies-Berger is another good painting to look at for an atmospheric glimpse of the early 1880s!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Here's a page with pictures of Paris around 1890:

Phantom was set "!.!.!.in the late 1800's"!. At this time there would have been no (or very little) electricity!. Streets would have been lit by gaslight - streetlamps with gas lanterns at the top!. Transportation was by horse drawn carriage!.

Protocol and etiquette were everything to Parisians!. It was critical that you behaved the correct way, did the correct thing, wore the correct clothes!. Here's a sample of women's clothing - http://www!.b-muse!.com/Collage-Sheets-Fas!.!.!.

Society was divided into classes with the aristocracy at the top and laborers at the bottom!. Food for the laborers was simple; bread, cheese, maybe occasionally a little meat cooked simply!. For the upper classes it would have been carefully prepared meals featuring rich sauces!. These would have been served in separate courses throughout an evening!. Wine was served with every meal, as it was safer than water!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
