Well, if you were a girl you could get your passage to America paid for you!. The southern colonies were desperately short of female settlers, and London recruiters searched for marriageable women, offering free passage and trousseau for girls of good reputation and a sense of adventure!. When they married their new husband had to reimburse the company with 120 pounds of good leaf tobacco!.

And many women came to the colonies as indentured servants!. Being an indentured servant was a risky business though, although they were supposed to be freed after a certain number of years, their mistresses and masters could sometimes be very cruel, and while their term of servitude lasted they were little better than slaves!. A quarter of indentured servants died before their period of servitude was up!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Indenture servitude was the common way for those who could not afford the trip to move to America!. They would agree to passage on a ship and the Captain would 'pay their way'!. On arrival, the Captain would sell your debt to somebody in the harbor town or nearby!. You'd then have to work for them for 6-8 years to pay off the debt!. After that, you were free to go as you wished!.

There was always a risk of having your debt purchased by an unscrupulous person, who would charge you room and board or find some other way to increase your debt, so you never paid it off and were in effect a slave!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You could claim that you knew where gold could be found in America!. Or you could claim that you were going to settle religious dissenters in the New World!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
