Human error caused the fatal deaths of those aboard the Titanic that day!. Basically the captain and navigator were unaware of the Iceberg, as they had not spotted it!. This giant block of ice tore a massive hole in the side of the vessel purely because of the sheer speed the ship was travelling at, and the angle at which the ice intercepted it!. If they had seen it from a distance previously, the crew could have maneuvered away from it, saving the precious lives of hundreds of people!. Unfortunately, they did not!.

Hi,

The titanic sank because it hit an iceberg which punctured 5 of its watertight compartments (it could have stayed afloat if the iceberg had only punctured 4)!.

However, it is remembered for the disaster that it was because of human error!. For example:

- The look-outs were not given binoculars!. This - combined with the fact that the ocean was so calm that night that there was no breaking (or disturbed) water at the base of the iceberg - made it difficult to spot the approaching iceberg!.
- The messengers or telegraph boys had been messing around so when they sent out a (real) distress message it was ignored as another practical joke!. (The California was much nearer than the Carpathia - the ship that finally reached the survivors - but it ignored the call for help because of this!.)
- Captain Smith ignored several ice warnings which were sent to him and even ordered the ship engines to go faster (to make good time)!.
- The Titanic did not have any red distress rockets (which would signal extreme danger) and instead only had white one (which signalled slight distress)!. Nearby ships were not therefore aware of any need for a speedy rescue!.
- There was not enough lifeboats for even half the passengers on board and the ones that were there were not filled to their full capacity!. (They were designed to take 65 people but some only had 12 or 20 in them when they were lowered!.)
- The wrong location was given in the distress signal!. The location of the Titanic was inaccurately estimated so that a couple of ships who did respond to the distress message ended up on the wrong side of an ice belt and (in one case) further away from the Titanic than they had been!.
- It kept moving!. Although reported as having stopped upon impact with the iceberg, when the wreck was investigated following its discovery in 1985, it was found the engines were still on 'Slow Ahead'!.
- The rudder was too small for a ship the size of Titanic which meant it could not provide enough power to turn the ship quick enough when the iceberg was spotted!.
- The keel originally held when the ship broke in half!. Had it snapped when the ship did then the back half of the ship (which fell back horizontally) would not have been pulled upright to be allowed to flood with water and could potentially have stayed afloat until help arrived!.
- The lifeboats failed to return to pick up survivors after Titanic went under!. There were 20 lifeboats nearby who could have picked up extra survivors but only 1 came back by which time all but 6 of the people in the water had died from hypothermia (in the freezing cold water) or drowned!.

All of this resulted in the loss of over 1500 people out of the 2200 passengers and staff on board when the Titanic sank at 2:20am on April 15, 1912!.

Hope this helps!.

I'm pretty sure it was the ice burg because in the movie i think when they fall in the water they die because of freezing cold temperatures or something i watched it when i was a kidWww@QuestionHome@Com

The giant iceburg smashes into the Titanic, and smashes a big hole which causes the ship to sink!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

it was more like human error caused the ship to hit a ice burg!. then human error compounded the problem to few life boats!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

the titanic sank i guess because of the big ice berg it hit and it left a big hole in the shipWww@QuestionHome@Com
