Question: What were the Puritan's motives for freedom!?

It's a very loaded question!.

England had a Civil War between King Charles I and Parliament!. The many who rose to command the Parliament army was Oliver Cromwell!. He was one of the great military geniuses of British History!. He won the war and Charles I was executed!. The monarchy was abolished!.

He also belonged to the Puritan sect of the Church of England!. They Puritans are to the Church what Whabi (Saudi) Muslims are to Islam!. They are fundamentalist, intolerant fanatics!.

Cromwell used the army turn Britain into a fundamentalist religious state!. He outlawed smoking, drinking, gambling, non-religious literature, prostitution, sporting events, theater, and anything that distracted people from working and praying!. The Puritans pretty much ran and religiously oppressed Britain!. The only exception was that he allowed Jews to come back and settle in Britain!. It was part of some wierd Puritan end of the world prophecy!.

After about 10 years, Cromwell died, and the people had enough!. The commander of the army in Scotland, General Monck marched south and restored Parliament and the monarchy to end the military-religious dictatorship!.

The late King's son, Charles II, was brought back!. All the things Cromwell outlawed where his hobbies so they were brought back!. The first thing he did was dig up Cromwell's corpse and hang it!. His followers got the hint!. They started moving to Massachusetts!.

Some remained behind!. Now, Charles II was a very easy going guy!. He was known as "The Merry Monarch"!. He believed in live and let live religiously!. He even wanted to stop persecuting Catholics!. If someone wanted to live the Puritan life, he was fine with it!.

The problem is that the Puritans kept agitating to return to the Cromwell days!. This annoyed both the public and Charles (he loved his father very much)!. So since the Puritans were trying to force their religion down everyone's throat, the government started cracking down on them!.

Most of this bunch are the ones we call the Pilgrims!. The moved with the rest of their Puritan brethren to Massachusetts to fulfill their dream of exercising their God-given right to deny religious freedom to others, specially Indians

Of course, some of them say this as hypocrisy and were kicked out of the colony!. These men went on to found other colonies such as Rhodes Island and Connecticut!.

So, their motives for freedom was the right to oppress others until they came around to the Puritan way of thinking and believing!.
