early history, depending on how far back you go, is scattered and therefore incomplete!. once anything is determined to be 'incomplete' a whole host of theories, ideas, some half-baked and others well-formed, are usually interviewed!. new, big, better, best discoveries are being made every day and therefore, all once-held ideas have to be reformed, rethought, etc!. sorry to be vague but while your question is well made, the question remains as vague as the answer (you seek)! perfect example of it all goes back to around 1880s when so-called scientists and armchair anthropologists just knew that humans and dinosaurs lived together!. today!? well, we know better 'cause humans are smaller and therefore would've been on the dinos' menu for lunch!. under those circumstances, i doubt we would've gotten far at all on the evolutionary trail (or any body's trail)!. bye, bye birdie!
