Briefly !.!.!.

Approximately 2,500 years ago (in 490 BC to be exact) the Persian Empire tried to add Greece to its collection of provinces: the attempt was defeated at Marathon by the Athenians and Plataeans (and the runner Pheidippides ran 26 miles to Athens bringing news of the victory, this being the origin of our modern Marathon)!.

The Persians tried again in 480-479 BC, being defeated at Salamis in 480 and Plataea in 479!. Had they succeeded, Greece would have been added to the Persian Empire and much of what we know as Western thought would have been suppressed or at least significantly altered!. The success of tiny Greece against the huge Persian Empire encouraged Westerners to stand up and fight for their freedoms and cultures!. It also made Greek the leading culture in the Mediterranean world, and we still retain strong elements of this today!.

In particular the Greeks defined the forms of government we understand (or think we understand) today!. There are (according to Aristotle) three: monarchy, which has one ruler; aristocracy, in which a select group rules; and constitutional government, in which the laws rule and are administered by elected officials!. (There are also three perverted forms of government: tyranny, where one man abuses power; oligarchy, where a group rules selfishly in its own interest; and democracy, where ignorant mobs or parties led by unscrupulous demagogues rule at the whim of the majority!.)

Your second question can be understood one of two ways: does 'foundations' mean cultural features they passed to us, or leagues of their own states that they founded!?
1) The Greeks left us the foundations of free speech, government by elected officials (and the corruption that resulted), drama, poetry, history, mechanical inventions from steam engines to astrolabes, naturalistic (in both senses of the term) statuary and numerous other things!. They established the Olympic Games!. Much of our scientific terminology and about 30-40% of English words in current use are of Greek origin or derivation (e!.g!. amnesia, dyslexia, psychology, photography, xenophobia)!.
2) The Greeks founded the Delian League, the League of Corinth, the Symmachy, and various other associations of city-states and island communities!. Internet searches will provide more information on these, for example on the Delian League (the most important one):

The myths and legends of Heracles, Bellerophon, Orpheus, Perseus, Theseus, Achilles and others can be found by internet searching 'Greek heroes' - the link below is a good start: just look in the lower part of the page and on the left you will see 'Heroes and other legends' - click the arrow next to the space containing the word 'Select' and run the cursor onto the name(s) of your choice!.
