Aboriginal rights activism was a strong issue in Australia during the 1960s, which was influenced by the Civil Rights movements in the U!.S!. One famous case was the 'Freedom Rides', organised by students of Sydney University to areas of N!.S!.W where Aboriginal-White race divide was quite strong!.

Culturally, both British and American influences mixed in the 1960s Australia!. The television shows, music and fashion were mainly American or British influences!.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Australia was looking for its own identity!. Australia having its own honours system in 1975!. In 1984, 'Advance Australia Fair' officially became our national anthem!.

In 1986, Australia has passed an act called the Australia Act, where in one part of the Act, Australia left the British legal system by no longer having the British Privy Council as the highest place for appeals in Australia (only appeals from state courts could go there up to 1986)!.

The Bicentenary in 1988 led to an increase in patriotic attitudes and families became more interested in finding out when did their family arrive in Australia!.

The early to mid 1990s saw Australia's world political and economic stance leaning to Asia!. Once Howard became PM in 1996, Australia was heading for stronger political ties with the U!.S as it has been in 1960s!.

American culture is found more so in today than ever before in the way Austraians are spelling words to the dress sense and music!. One major factor for this would be the internet and the amount of American news stories on Australian news broadcasts!.
