The reign of terror began in September 1793 after the execution of king Louis and his Queen Marie Antoinette!. In September Robespierre under the banner of The Committee for Public Safety began to go after people whose opinions or beliefs did not fall into line with his own!. These citizens had committed no crime but were denounced by Robespierre as counter-revolutionaries because their political or social views differed from Robespierre`s!. During the 9 months that followed up to 50!.000 people were executed at the guillotine!. The reign of terror achieved nothing and despite Robespierre`s attempts to sanctify the revolution with blood and inspire his supporters the common people started to turn on him as the mortuaries were growing ever more full and Robespierre had his allies executed!. The final straw came when Robespierre proposed a move away from christianity and the creation of a new set of values, his `Republic of Virtue`!. On July 27th 1794 a group of Jacobin allies arrested him and the following day he was sent to the guillotine!. The terror was over!. Hope this helps!.!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
