I was there!. The President LBJ tried to run the war from the White House with absolutely no military experience of his own with hand picked toads for advisors!. The Vietnamese people in the South were lazy and incompetent!. The ones in the North were determined!. THey had nothing to to lose and a country to gain!. Their leaders care little for how many died to achieve the ends!.
It could have been over in 64 if Johnson had not been President!. If Kennedy had not gotten us into it, it never would have happened!. We already saw the French defeated there!. What made us think we could do better!.
I saw South Vietnamese crawl into holes and hide when the fighting started!. I did, I saw it!. IF a country is not willing to help itself, precious little can be done!.
It also was dragged out too long!. General Dynamics, General Motors, Boeing all had vast stock in the war!. They wanted it to go on so they could make money!. Never met one of their sons in a mud ditch!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

first of all victory was not impossible!. It was MADE impossible by deliberate actions from WITHIN the US

The "endless supply of vietnamese troops" is a nice theory - but FALSE!.
The North Vietnamese dictators used draftee soldiers to invade the South!. They did have endless supplies of weapons from the USSR and China (also "instructors" to operate more complex weapons)

If you need a reason- the war was "unwinnable" because the north vietnamese dictators did not care how many of their subjects would die in the war!. The dictators were safe no matter what happened!. All they had to do is drag the war long enough for the US to quit - which, thanks to the Democratic controlled Congress- it did (stabbing the South Vietnamese republic in the back in the process)

Of course if your teacher is a liberal this answer will get a failing grade!. Despite it being true!.
The problem is that many of those who sabotaged the US then - are in power now (and still active)

Mind you- I'm from Poland so I should not care (we were helping the Soviets in that war)!. But the times have changed and today we worry about having the fate of South Vietnam trust upon us by the new "peaceniks" in the US Congress!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

By the time the US entered the war the ability to win the war was very thin!. To win the war the US would have to invade and destroy North Vietnam!. Should the US do this then chances are China and the USSR would enter the war!. To defeat North Vietnam the US must destroy and occupy north Vietnam!. You win a war by destroying your enemy not by learning how to live with taking a beating!.

The way the US fought the war in Vietnam was like trying to win a football gain without letting your team cross the fifty yard line!.

China would not tolerate a US presence on their border!.

Better than fighting the war however would have been to prevent it from happening in the first place!.

This could have been easily done had Truman not been appeasing the French but doing the right thing by the Vietnamese and insuring their independence!.

1!. The Vietnamese had an endless supply of troops, while the US had to constantly train, pay, transport new troops in daily which was very costly!.
2!.WW2 mentality/tactics of attrition turned the people to the Communist!.
3!. we were in the middle of a civil war, which can only be brought to an end between the people of Vietnam and not US firepower!.
