Sepharad was the term given by Jews to refer to Spain!. The name Sepharad is mentioned in the bible in the book of Obidiah where the prophet refers to the exiles from jerusalem as being in Sepharad!. Although the exact location is unclear from late Roman times the Jews took this to assume it was in Spain and by the middle ages Jews referred to Spain as Sepharad!. Little is known about the early Jews who arrived in Spain after being expelled from Jerusalem but in the 7th century when the Spanish Kings converted to Catholicism Judaism was outlawed!. When the muslims conquered Spain in the 11th century the jews flourished under their rule but after the christians gained Toledo in 1085 the religion again declined and the christian crusaders were responsible were butchering many jews in Toledo!. In 1250 Pope Innocent IV issued a papal bull which was essentially a spanish version of apartheid forbidding jews from eating, drinking, bathing and living with christians, employing christians and they had to wear a yellow badge on their clothing!. By the mid 13th century christians controlled most of Spain except for a small area from Grenada to the Mediterranean and Jews and Muslims were heavily involved in all aspects of public life including political and financial areas!. However, in 1391 anti-jewish riots broke out as anti-sematism grew and thousands of jews were killed and by the 15th century most jews had been forced to leave Spain or convert!. In 1492 King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella decreed their expulsion and their last stronghold Grenada was siezed!. As a result Sephardim jews established themselves in Egypt, Morroco, Ottoman Empire and Italy as tens of thousands were expelled from Spain and Portugal!. Today, jews from these resettled communities are called sephardic jews and the term is used to refer to jews who do not originate from central and eastern europe!. The treatment of the jews in Spain has been referred to as the Spanish equivalant of the final solution as thousands were massacred and their communties and towns burnt to the ground and the papal decree which officially closed the spanish inquisition and ended the persecution of the jews was finally issued on july 15th 1834!. Hope this helps!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Sephardic Jews are basically Spanish Jews!. After the Spanish reconquered the Iberian peninsula in 1492 from the Islamic Moors, all Jews were told to leave (in other words, millions were killed)!. Of course, not litterally ALL Jews left or were killed!. The Jews that survived, are Sephardic Jews!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
