Henry was very supportive of the Pope before he refused to annul Henry's marriage to Catherine of Aragon!. Henry considered himself a good Catholic up until the Faith interfered with his personal life!

The evidence is on every British (and possibly Canadian and Australian etc) coin!.

Each coin has the following on it: Elizabeth II!. D!.G!. REG!. F!.D!.

This means Elizabeth, by the grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith!.

The title Defender of the Faith was a title granted to Henry VIII for his defence of Catholicism, the treatise: Assertio Septem Sacramentorum - Defence of the Seven Sacraments in 1521 by Pope Leo X!.

This title was re-conferred on all of Henry's successors, the Kings of England, by Parliament after Henry broke with Rome!.

Henry was declared Defender of the Faith by the previous pope, but in the 1523 election, he actually supported the election of his minion, Cardinal Wolsey!. He failed, and one of the de Medicis became pope - Clement VII, who would eventually be a big fat thorn in Henry's side for a long time to come!.
