there are many ways to find out!.
archeology: digging through the layers of earth and rubble and dating the layers!.
asking the local people about folk lore, myths and studying the language!.
when writing was found, matching the language to the writing, translating!. the mayans left alot of history written in stone and alot of books but almost all the books were burned by the spanish prists but the stone writings were not destroyedWww@QuestionHome@Com

Historians haven't been able to do as much of a job as they would like to, since the Spanish Conquistadors and priests managed to destroy almost all written history of the Aztec and Maya!. Archaeologists have been able to piece together a lot!.

There is one written Maya book that survived this "purge of witchcraft"!. It is called the "Dresden Codex" Google the term!. It has helped decode the Mayan glyphs as much as the Rosetta Stone helped translate the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
