The colonial troops played an enormous part in Britain's efforts in World War One!. They ranged from the Australian and New Zealand soldiers (ANZACS) nicknamed the "Diggers" who earned themselves a fearsome reputation amongst the enemy, similar to the Scottish Highland regiments who were known as "the Devils in skirts"!.
Canadians and South Africans were conspicuous in the valour of their battalions, especially at Passchendale and Ypres!.

Perhaps the supreme symbol of imperial war effort was the Imperial Camel Corps, formed in 1916!. Although ANZACS accounted for three quarters of it's strength, there were also troops from Hong Kong and Singapore, volunteers from the Rhodesian Mounted Police, a South African mining prospector who had fought against the British in the Boer War, a fruit grower from the Canadian Rockies and a pearl fisherman from Queensland!.
Yet it would be a mistake to think that this was an "all-white" affair!. For at the outbreak of war, the man who would become India's most famous political and spiritual leader declared "We are, above all, British citizens of the Great British Empire!. Fighting as the British are at present in a righteous cause for the good and glory of human dignity and civilization!. Our duty is clear: to do our best to support the British and fight with our life and property!." Many thousands of Indians shared Ghandi's sentiments, for in the autumn of 1914 around a third of British forces in France were from India and by the end of the war more than a million Indians served overseas, more than all the other "white" dominions put together!.
also came the men of the British West Indies Regiment who (much to their disgust) were used primarily for the extremely dangerous and thankless task of ammunition carrying and very little respect was paid to them by other nations officers!.

Altogether, this was a thoughroughly multinational enterprise which, unlike it's Hapsburg and Russian counterparts, somehow lasted despite profound ethnic divisions and frequently lamentable leadership!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Soldiers from Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada all fought for the allies during the war!. The Battle at Galliopi was fought by mainly Australian and New Zealand troops!. The British Navy fought to control the seas and protect the convoy routes from the German U-Boats!. also fought an indecisive battle at Jutland against the German surface fleet!.
Almost forgot about the Indians!. They fought for the crown on the Western Front, in the Middle East and in East Africa!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
