This refers to Diarmuid Mac Murchada, the King of Leinster, who in 1168 was deposed from his throne by the High King of Ireland at the time, Toirdhealbach Uí Conchobhar!. Diarmuid sought help from the English King Henry II to get himself restored to his throne!. Henry referred him to several English nobles, especially Richard de Clare, who was nicknamed "Strongbow"!. Diarmuid promised de Clare his daughter Aoife in marriage, as well as the crown of Leinster after Diarmuid!.
So this was the first time that English troops permanently held Irish land, having been invited in by a former provincial king!. The Irish word for the English is "Sasanach", which means "Saxon", so that is what the song is referring to!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
