The concept of time is an innate quality of human intelligence, that distinguishes us from animals!. The measuring of time thru the calendar began with agriculture, as this was needed to know when to plant crops and when to harvest; an accurate calendar became a survival factor!.

The idea of measuring time beyond a lifetime began with civilization, as here there arose institutions that might last more than a lifetime!. This is different from tribal societies, where social groupings exist as family groupings; so no long-term measure of time is needed!.!.!.Typically, such a society may state the age of the universe is the same as the age of a tree; they really don't need - for themselves- any better accuracy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I would say ancient times with the creation of the sun dial, which I believe was either a Greek or Egyptian creation!. (They probably had it around the same time!.!.!. with Greek proceeding a bit!.!.!.)

Conceptualized, I would say by probably Copernicus!.

I think humans realized time existed as cave dwellers and farmers!. I think when they were nomadic, it was not really much of a big deal, but then they realized the sun was setting and rising!. When the stopped wondering, is when they realized it was time to start keeping track of time, because now they had to plan when to grow crops and when to reinforce their shelters!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
