As a general rule, most battlefield commanders would like a combined arms approach, with as solid a force of infantry in the center (preferably on a hill, ridge or other high ground) supported by artillery behind them!. Additional infantry and/or cavalry would cover the flanks and some forces should be kept in reserve behind the active lines of battle!.

The landscape will also play a large part in how either the attacker or the defender would deploy his forces, as both would try to take advantage of high ground and avoid being caught in the open within range of the enemy!. Rivers or impassable woods or hills or cliffs may be used to 'anchor' one or both flanks, and roads can be used to speed movement of troops!.

On the attack, the commander would usually try to break the opponent's line or flank the opponent's line so as to place forces in the enemy's rear!.

One other set of factors in planning a battle strategy is the overall strategy of the war or of the theater (area) of the war!. If the overall strategy is to destroy the enemy military forces, a commander would act differently than if the goal was to control a certain road, river or area!.

Overall, the best approach was usually to focus on your overall goal but avoid being too rigid in your plans so that you can take advantage of any mistake by the enemy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Warfare of the period typically consisted of masses of troops opposing each other!. Unlike the American Revolution, soldiers would not simply stand in the middle of a field at close distance!. One side would typically be entrenched and the other would be attacking their position!. Attacks were usually preceded by an artillery barrage, and cavalry was used to try to flank enemy positions and get behind their lines!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
