Could someone please explain the concept of semiotics in layman's terms!?
I am taking a college art history course, and have been given several sources (online readings) about semiotics!. I have read and re-read them so many times, and I still do not understand the concept!.
This is the reading that I didn't understand:

The links that came up when I Googled "semiotics" weren't any more comprehensible than the stuff I am required to read!. :P

As it states, Semiotics is the understanding of meaning!. People are very curious, which is why we went into space and walked on the moon!. Semiotics is the study of how we represent things; the basis of signs, symbols and language!.
Hold up your hand and extend your pointer finger and index finger!. This is a hand gesture that most people call a peace sign!. If someone has never seen anyone do that before, that gesture would have no meaning!. It is the fact that, as a people, we accept that those two fingers being extended represent "peace!." We have given that symbol meaning and that is what Semiotics is all about!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
