Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
The form of government established two years after the beginning of the American Revolution was a Confederation, under the Articles of Confederation, adopted by the Continental Congress in 1777!.

(The American Revolution is generally thought to have begun with the "shot heard round the world" and the battles at Lexington and Concord in 1775!.)

We continued under that system for about 10 years!.

In 1787, Congress adopted the United States Constitution, and it is then that the United States of America became a Democratic Republic rather than a Confederation!.

The document defines the three main branches of the government: The legislative branch with a bicameral Congress, an executive branch led by the President, and a judicial branch headed Supreme Court!. Besides providing for the organization of these branches, the Constitution carefully outlines which powers each branch may exercise!. It also reserves numerous rights for the individual states, thereby establishing the United States' federal system of government!.

This replaced the monarchy we were in under Great Britain!.

In 1775, the war had begun but Independence had not yet been declared!. In 1776, Independence was declared (with the signing of the Declaration of Independence) but no form of government had yet been established!.

So it's:

(Prior to 1776) Monarchy!.
(1777-1787) Confederacy!.
(1787 - present) Democratic Republic!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

a Republic, where the qualified voters elect representatives to run the country for them!.

A democracy is where the qualified voters run everything directly!.

and yes, a monarchyWww@QuestionHome@Com

A Confederation!. A group of co-equal partners with an equal voice in affairs, minimal national government!. The colonies became thirteen nations loosely organized!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
