Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: "What if" history is always appealing to me, because I think to really understand history, you have to understand its causal relationships, and understand the breakdown of events and how they had changed everything!. In that regard then, I believe that our world would be strikingly similar, yet world's apart from now!. First off, 9/11 has been both springboard and scapegoat for United States foreign policy for the past 7 years!. It has dictated how we deal with others, and how we deal with quote "rouge states" unquote!. 9/11 was the impetus that allowed us to do the things we have done, virtually unchecked, for the last 7 years!. First off, our entrance into Afghanistan, for better or for worse, was prompted by 9/11!. Providing 9/11 never happens, we would have never had the cause, (or the desire) to invade Afghanistan!. Bluntly put, we are a selfish nation, by in large, and more than 75% of the nation couldn't tell you where Afghanistan was on a map days before we invaded!. So regardless of the implications, and whatever violations of human law were committed by the Afghans (the Taliban were one of the most brutally repressive regimes in the world, and almost 3/4 of the world's opium came from Afghanistan,) we would have cared less what took place!. Then comes the question of Iraq!. To understand Iraq though, you have to understand the public mindset following 9/11!. We wanted blood!. We screamed it from the tallest tower, demanded revenge (not justice, don't ever delude yourself into thinking we wanted justice for 9/11,) and for our revenge, we would sacrifice virtually anything (or anybody!.) Into that mindset, we gave our leaders carte blanche to carry out our will!. To that end, Bush II took it upon himself to carry out what amounted to a pet project!. Remember, if you can, as it has been buried in the jumble and mess that is Iraq, the original idea for going into Iraq!. WMD!. Weapons of Mass destruction!. We were afraid, afraid that terrorists would somehow get their hands on these phantom WMD's that Iraq had laying around!. We were motivated by the idea that another attack was "imminent" to use the words of the Bush Administration!. So, even though the outside world, the terror attack-less world, said that Iraq was mostly on the up and up (as much as was possible for Saddam,) we handed the most powerful military in the world to the president and said "avenge us!." We really didn't even care who, we wanted destruction!. But you have to remember other things that took place!. Our economy could be vastly different for a couple of reasons!. One, We can't pretend that 9/11 didn't have an impact on the economy!. Not to mention one of the most nefarious pieces of legislation ever, the USA PATRIOT act was passed, which, in essence, allows any criminal justice organization eavesdrop on you without just cause, circumventing the Constitution!. The other highly probable idea is that right now, the Democratic party could be chanting "4 more years!" for President John Kerry, as pre-9/11, Bush had an awful approval rating (in the low 40s) and some political pundits were already suggesting that W lacked the political know-how of poppa!. 9/11 opened doors for the Bush administration that really would have stayed closed otherwise!.Www@QuestionHome@Com We would still be in Iraq!. If you go back and read newspaper accounts about the search for WMDs and the comments from the White House, you'll see it!. We would not be in Afghanistan!.
