Question: When Prince Charles becomes King one day, why will he adapt the name of George!?
When Prince Charles becomes King of Great Britain I guess he will be an old man, as his mother Elizabeth II seems to enjoy the good health her mother had for a long time!.!.!.he could have to wait another 18 years!. Why will he adapt the name George of all names!.!.The first 2 Georges of Britain were born in Germany and didn't even speak English well and George III later in life suffered from some kind of mental disorder!. George VI was a womanizer and definitely not a good king!.!.!.George V was not much better!.!. George VI was the father of Queen Elizabeth and I am sure he did the best he could to make a good king but he was not really prepared to ever have to become King as nobody would have imagined that his elder brother Edward VIII would abdicate in order to marry the twice divorced Wallis Simpson!.!. So why does Prince Charles want to adapt the name of a row of Kings who are not really remembered as having been outstandingly good monarchs!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well!.!.!.all monarch names have ups and downs!. While George V was a jerk and George VI was a nice guy but weak, the people have somewhat fond memories of them!. George III went mad latter in life, but he was very popular before!. He was a very duty oriented king who championed education, science, and farming!. His reputation in America is not the best, but that's usually a mistake!. All the tyrannical acts we attribute to him, were actually acts of a greedy Parliament!. As a constitutional monarch dedicated to a constitutional principals, he had to go along!. George II was very popular as well!. He was also the last British monarch to command an army in battle!. George I was relatively harmless so people don't have bad feelings towards him!. George IV was a waste of skin, but he was one out of six!.

George VI was actually named Albert!. George was one of his middle names, but Albert was his first name!. The family called him Bertie!. Like his grand father, Edward VII, he felt that Albert was to German a name so he went with George, after his father!. George VI actually had a younger brother named George who died in action during World War II!.

Oh, and Charles II was neither weak nor a puppet of Parliament!. In fact, he was able to force Parliament to back down a number of times!. He was very popular!. The people called him "The Merry Monarch"!. He was shrewd political operator!. He was hardly a religious bigot!. He worked hard to get equal rights for Catholics, but could not get it past the public's hatred of them!. I think Prince Charles should go with Charles III!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

He will be George VII - if he outlives his Mother, or she abdicates!. At least this is what he has said!.
George VI was NOT a womanizer - his brother was and we know how he wound up - he abdicated for the "woman he loved" and was banished to Bermuda or somewhere!.
It is common practice for British Monarchs to change their names to honor a forbear!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It might be that the name Charles is even more ill-omened!. Charles I was executed, Charles II was an unpopular religious oppressor (actually a weak willed puppet of Parliament) who had to flee his own kingdom, and 'Bonnie Prince Charles' was associated with several unsuccessful internal uprisings!.

With any luck, he'll decide he's too old to rule and just abdicate in favor of William!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

A number of British kings have used another name upon their accession!. Queen Victoria's son Albert ruled as Edward VII!.

It's sort of the way the Pope assumes a different name upon his election!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

When Prince Charles succeeds his mother as monarch and if he uses his first given name, he would become known as Charles III!. However, Prince Charles has considered rejecting that style when he accedes to the throne, because of its associations with Britain's bloody past!. The move away from Charles stems from its associations with Charles I, who was beheaded in 1649 following the English Civil War, at the start of Oliver Cromwell's short-lived republic!. The executed monarch's son, Charles II, spent 18 years in exile and returned to England in 1660 but was nicknamed "The Merry Monarch" because of his string of mistresses!. Charles III is partially associated with the Catholic Jacobite pretender, Charles Edward Stuart (called Bonnie Prince Charlie), an enduring Scottish romantic figure, who claimed the throne as that style in the 18th century!.

The move would not be a first - three of the past six British monarchs chose a regnal name different from their first given name!. The most discussed alternative style has been "George VII", in honor of Charles's grandfather!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well the reason for the possible (remember nothing is fixed yet) change is that Charles I was beheaded and Charles II was not a very moral character!. Not exactly the sort of people the Prince would wish to associated with!.!.!. especially given the growing strength of the republican movement!. The George's compare fairly well to the Charles!

George VI may not have been prepared to be King and it certainly didn't do anything good for his health but he was a good King (compared to his immediate predecessors), saw us through the war and the partition of India and, most importantly, was Charles grandfather and someone he would like to honour!.

Personally I think George is a more regal name than Charles as well!. George III may have suffered a mental disorder but he is a most famous King who saw us through many historic moments in our history!. I believe that it would be a most appropriate name for the first new monarch of the new Millennium, providing a strong link to our past!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

He would not change his name to be George!. He would be King Charles III!. No one has ever changed their names to be in line with predecessors!. There were so many Georges because fathers named their sons after themselves, just like any other multi-generation family with men bearing the same first name!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The other name he was considering was Skippy, but his mother objected!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
