I think he was a man of his time and place, neither of which were particularly restrained or what we often term 'civilized!.'

Yes, he was violent!. Yes, he did impale people!. Yes, he'd probably be wanted globally for human rights abuses if he lived today!.

In the context of his time, however, his terror tactics sent a very clear message: cross me and you'll regret it for the rest of your life, which will not likely be long, but VERY painful!.

Hmmm!. He did good and evil!. That makes him human!. Every leader will do good along with the bad!. Hitler was even known to bring Christmas dinner to poor German families who didn't have any!.
