It depends on the country!. The Saxon laws (Germany) said that women could own land from marriage until death, usually a "wedding night gift" from their husband!.

In England after the Norman invasion, women could own land in their own right, though they usually exercised legal authority through husbands and sons!.

In France, you have the example of Elenor of Aquitaine inheiriting the largest demesne in the country, as her father's only heir!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes they could but it depended on the where in Europe as to how the laws worked!. They may have to give a portion or all of their land to their husband but could retain rights to to their dower after his death!. They also could recieve a portion of his estate if he were to pass away (I seem to recall from my reading that 1/3 was 'standard'), which made some widows rather wealthy after their 2nd or 3rd marriage, and that much more attractive as a potential marriage partner!. She may also recieve "ownership" on behalf of a minor child!.

Here is a comparison of different medieval laws that also address women's ownership rights that you might find interesting!. http://www!.geocities!.com/athens/styx/932!.!.!.
Here too is a link to a portion of a book on woman's history that covers the topic (there is a section on property rights) http://books!.google!.com/books!?id=xFEC5tq!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
