As far as I know it goes something like this:

By that time the moorish were all over the peninsula and the marriage of Fernando de Aragón and Isabel de Castilla y León was somehow political, because and the 3 regions formed one big Kingdom, they were both Catholic and begun the “Reconquista Espa?ola” reconquering the land occupied by the muslims!.

Shortly the Kingdoms of Navarra and Galicia were annexed and the only part left was Granada (the southern part of Spain) which was reconquered on 1492 (the same year Columbus reached the west Indies)!.

During the middle ages, Christianity had flourished all over Europe and the Iberian peninsula had been occupied by muslims threatening to advance into France!. During the Reconquista, Jews were also expelled from the peninsula and Spain was left to be a fervent faithfull Catholic land!. So can you imagine how powerfull it was after so many centuries of muslim occupation!? Luther, Calvin and all other reformers simply had no chance to convince Spaniards against Rome!

During the Reconquista time, the legendary Cid Campeador played an important role!.

also, during the reconquering of Granada was that a famous phrase (that we still use) came around: The queen used to ask his generals every morning if they could see Moorish boats accross the Gibraltar Strait, and her generals answered “the coast is clear” :)
Hope this helps!Www@QuestionHome@Com

It was right on the border between the two (end of Medieval, beginning of Renaissance), starting with the marriage of Isabella and Ferdinand!. But they only united Castille (or Castilla) and Aragon with their marriage!. They launched campaign after campaign in order to gain new lands, such as Grenada and some of the Moorish lands!.

After Isabella died, Spain was split again, but when Ferdinand died it was reunited under Charles, the Holy Roman Empire!. He ruled parts of Germany and the Netherlands (inherited from his father) as well as Spain (inherited from his mother, Isabella and Ferdinand's daughter Juana)!.

And Spain did remain a loyal catholic country because of Ferdinand and Isabella expelled Jews and Moors, and introduced the Spanish Inquisition, which found non-Catholics and punished!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It is a little more than the marriage of Ferdinand and Isabella, it is the bringing together of all of the principalities in the Iberian peninsula with the exception of Portugal!. It involved many things including government under one King, changes in the association of government with church!. Put in generally in the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella, but it might have started a bit before that - I am not sure!.

My old text that covered that and the unification of France was titled Europe in Transition and was written by a Wallace Ferguson!. That book however, is older than your mother!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
