Both on land (e!.g!., commanding entire fleet movements) and at sea (actual warfare tactics)!. Thanks!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
On Land, Nimitz and Yamamoto!. Nimitz had a clear view on how to conduct the war in the Pacific and Yamamoto made a great job in setting up the strategies and organizing the fleet's logistics to launch simultaneous attacks against Pearl Harbour, Indonesia, Malaysia, Indochina, the Phillipines and the Pacific, thus conquering an immense territory in a matter of weeks!.

At sea, Fletcher was a great task force commander!. Halsey was stupid, he screwd up in th Phillipines Sea in 1944, charging north against the Jap carriers, leaving the american invasion fleet totally unprotected!. Kurita didn't destroy the whole US fleet just because he was too cautious!. Some German U-Boot comanders deserve big credit, like Commander Gunther Prien who succesfully managed to sneak into the main British Home Fleet naval base at Scapa Flow, torpedoing British battleships at will!. At sea Captain Frederic 'Johnny' Walker who's escort group devised the tactics which eventually turned the tide in the battle of the Atlantic!. Sadly he died before the war ended!.

On land Karl Donitz, who's U boats nearly succeeded in starving Britain into submission!. Churchill said the only time he was concerned that Britain might loose the war was during the battle of the Atlantic!.

Edit
Competance amongst naval commanders does not sit to well with the 1st world war!. The fleets rearly met and when they did there was never any decisive out come!. Jutland and Dogger Bank both ended up with Britain having the upper hand despite loosing tactically and discovering significant design faults with their ships!.

Von Spee won a great victory at the Battle of Coronel, the first defeat for the Royal Navy in over 100 years and was a thorn in the side of the British, but made a catostrophic mistake by raiding the Falkands just after the Squdron sent to search for him had arrived!. Even then if he had pressed home his attack he might have won another victory, but he turned and ran, and his ships where soon destroyed,

Cunningham was a very good commander in the Mediterranean, where the Italians had a Navy that was pretty impressive (on paper)!. The Italians were hampered by fuel shortages and rigid orders for when to fight, but it was also Cunninghams skill that made them look so bleak!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
