define "proper" the romans began with the A5 and Watling street and the fosse way to allow their armies to get from A to attacking B in double quick time!.!.!.

then as the induistrial revolution progressed we moved form dirt tracks, to canals!.!.!. we didnt start building roads unitl we had need of them around the early 1800's, and then it was only MAIN roads!.!.!.

the development of our motorways didnt begin until 1957, and the M1 was laid from london to northampton!.!.!.

and now, for an island of 650 miles by 300, we have over 6000 miles of motorways!.!.!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Hi I would like to know what you mean by proper roads !?
Do you mean boring spaghetti Junctions or Motorways , UK has lovely scenery which can only be seen properly if you travel on our lovely A and B roads which are very quaint also to stop for lunch in adorable public houses with plenty of history to them ,not Burger King or Little Chefs as found on other roads with chips that taste of cardboard ,YUK!
Keep the UK as it is otherwise the character is lost and is then boring !.
