Cool down people, it's an interesting question, and an interesting topic!.

Indeed, the modern-day Assyrians are not the same as the empire-builders of ancient times; just as the modern Italians aren't like the empire-building Romans!. But, Italians can still be proud of their Roman heritage, which means the EMpire is a source of Italian nationalism!. For Italians, that's perfectly harmless!. In the same way, many Assyrians are justifiably proud of their ancestor's acheivements in empire-building - They were among the very first civilized people and led the first empire - and so the Assyrian empire is a source of Assyrian nationalism, as noted here:
http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Assyrian_na!.!.!.
Again, just as in the case of the Italians, perfectly harmless!.

We have an Assyrian-Christian church in our city, which shares the building with another community!. If you run into a lot of people who don't like Assyrians because of stuff that happened a couple of thousand years ago - Any Brits out there still mad at Italians, for what the Romans did in Britain!? - then you're hanging out with the wrong kind of despicable, prejudiced people!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The (very inequitable) muslim laws on marriage mean that the Christian communities in Iraq, like those in Egypt, are the closest modern representative of the pre-islamic inhabitants!.

They may have called themselves Assyrians in the 19th century, but others call them Nestorians or Chaldaeans!. The name Assyrian only became widely accepted in the early 20th century!.

How far the Christians of Iraq represent the ancient Assyrians (empire collapsed 614-609 BC) is anyone's guess!. In point of fact, one reason for the collapse of Assyria and the disappearance of the nation is that their policy of mass population transfers filled Assyria with a mixed population with no Assyrian traditions or loyalty!.

But I have the greatest admiration and respect for the modern Assyrians!. I was hitching a ride and one of them picked me up in a Rolls-Royce!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
