There were thirty-four in 1789, many of whom were active reformers!. Their power was undermined in 1787, paving the way for the provincial unrest and uprisings of 1789!.

Ancien Régime
The social and political structure of France, as it existed from the late 16th century until the French Revolution, typified by a hierarchical society and a dynastic state, where traditional orders and privileges were strongly upheld!.

Parlement
The Paris Parlement was the most important of a number of Parlements which had both juridical and political functions!. They had become a focus of opposition to the king, and were abolished briefly in 1771 until restored by Louis XVI in 1774, and were finally abolished in 1790!.

Absolutism

- Cahiers - Written petitions of grievances
- Intendants - Royal Civil Servants (Bureaucrats)

- Estates - the three social classes of France before the Revolution (the Clergy, the Nobility, and the Commons)
