Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The British monarch was the monarch of each different colony so they held the title King or Queen of each colony as opposed to King or Queen of the collective empire!. The Queen today is still independently the Queen of several states and if she were deposed in the U!.K she could go and rule one of the other nations!. Victoria took the title Empress of India as has been mentioned before me because she felt that since previous rulers of India had been called it she ought to be, it was more about prestige and status than anything else though!.Www@QuestionHome@Com Because the title of that monarch was always king/queen before they had an empire!. They would call the king/queen king of England, Scotland, Wales etc!. In April of 1876 Victoria was proclaimed Empress of India!. The succeeding British monarchs also held that title until Edward VI!.Www@QuestionHome@Com She would have TWO title: As ruler of a nation, she would be queen!. As ruler of the empire, she would be Empress!.
