Why did people want to settle in the suburbs!? How would you define a housewife living in the 50's!? What were gas prices, etc!. What did children do for entertainment!? You know, things like this, just stuff in general, anything!. What were the pro's and con's of the 50's!? Thank you :DWww@QuestionHome@Com Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: We did not have air conditioning, the house was cooled with a huge fan in the ceiling that pulled air in through the windows and up and out through the attic!. It was called an attic fan!. Mom was a housewife, Dad sold insurance!. We had a washing machine, but no dryer!. We had to hang laundry outside to dry!. If it rained for a couple of days, we strung rope inside and dried necessary items that way!. Entertainment for kids!? It was called "Go outside and play!" We played with all the other neighborhood kids!. Games of Red Rover, Hide n Seek, jump rope, cowboys and indians, Mother, May I!?, swing the statues (this is where the person that was "It" would grab you by your arm, swing you around in a circle several times as hard as they could, then let you go!. You were flung on the grass and your job was to "freeze" in whatever position you landed in!. First person to move became "It")!. We rode our bikes all over the neighborhood, or just played dolls or "house" under the trees!. Mud pies were always fun!. Www@QuestionHome@Com People moved to the suburbs because it was a lot cheaper to buy housing and they wanted more land!. The housewifes were just that!. No life of there own!. They were the slaves!. Raising the kids, cooking, cleaning, and doing what their husband said!. Gas was super cheap!. You would pull in and the gas station attendant would ask you how much you wanted!. He would lift up your hood and check your oil, and he would clean your windows!. Cash only!. They hadnt had self serve back then!. We barely ever watched tv!. We played outside all day long!. Did things outside!. Got fresh air and exercise!. I remember my mom used a washboard to clean ourclothes and the towels would be so hard because there was no softener and you hung up your things on a clothesline!. You didnt have to be afraid of being outside!. The movie theatres were huge!. Only one big screen!.I could go on and on, but the best thing is that people were healthy!. You didn't have cancer, and aids and all these other diseases!. We didn't have processed food or microwaves!.Www@QuestionHome@Com |
