Foreigners always had free travel in Germany in 1933-1939, and Germans were free to give their views - often with some looking over their shoulders, it is true!. Even non-nazis were impressed with Hitler's perceived achievement of turning the German economy around, making Germany prosperous at home and respected - perhaps feared - abroad!.

'If Hitler had died in 1938 aged 49, he would go down without qualification as one of the greatest Germans in history!.' Joachim C!. Fest!.

Jews suffered restrictions, it is true, but it was only after Kristallnacht in late 1938 that things became really difficult for them!. The holocaust happened in wartime!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Despite atrocities commited by Hitler, the majority of the German people actually supported him!. He overturned the Treaty of Versailles and the Germans were happy that he made Germany strong, powerful and respected again!. Even during the war, the Germans generally enjoyed a relatively higher standard of living!. It was only after the German military disasters in Russia that the people started doubting him!. However, they fought for him till the end!.

Hitler really wasn't popular!. He killed his enemies, and terrorized the people with the SS and brownshirts!. So, not much the public could do to oppose him, for fear of being killed or jailed, or sent to concentration camps!. This is how dictators stay in power!. Think Saddam, Mao, Castro, and Stalin!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
