New York City has a natural harbor suitable for ocean going vessels, I believe it is ice free most of the year, except in rare instances like in 1816, and the Hudson provides access to the interior, and a source of the furs traded by the Iroquois league with the Dutch and later the English!. New York city was the main port of entry for immigrants, so it was a natural spot for immigrants to remain, once the best lands in the West were taken!. (after 1900) When a bridge was built between Manhattan and Brooklyn, Brooklyn became more open to settlement, increasing further the attractiveness of the NYC area!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
