Well, first off, the 3rd SS Panzer Division wasn't a part of the German Army (Heer), it was Waffen-SS!. For Army, I would say the Gro?deutschland Division was one of the best!. But it would be hard to tell what unit was the "toughest"!. You need to be more specific!. By the end of the war, many divisions were fought to obliteration, they were tough yes, but also greatly outnumbered with dwindling supplies, reinforcements, and nearly zero air support!. Not to mention, a few *******(Hitler, Himmler, Gorring to name a few) that were in charge made horrible military and tactical decisions(among others) that cost hundreds of thousands of German soldiers lives needlessly, and resulted in the destruction of most of Germany's armor and planes!.

FYI: Members of the armed forces at the time could not vote, or be in the Nazi party!.

Personally, I like the 9th SS Division Hohenstaufen!. No atrocities, actually commended for the care they gave to Allied soldiers at Arnhem (Operation Market Garden)!. Made up mostly of conscripts about 18 years old, something like 80%!. Had a great fighting record, and were a part of many major battles!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
