Question: How much debt was britain in due to the french and indian war!?

British author and economics expert Adam Smith wrote in his book "The Wealth of Nations" (published in 1776 soon after the French and Indian War) that the defense of the American colonies had cost the British people "upwards of 90 millions" (meaning pounds) which would be about $45,000,000 at a time when this was a very large sum indeed!.

It is not surprising that the British wanted to regain some of this expense by taxing Americans - some of whom definitely owed their lives to British for military help in defeated Indian tribes backed by French soldiers and French guns!.

- - and I'm an American - sorry we were ungrateful,
- but we did eventually write off the British / U!.S!. WWI debt
- - though I believe the British WWII debt to the U!.S!. was demanded and only fully repaid to the US in recent years!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
