This is a paper i had to type of the Athenians and Spartans last year!. Its broken down!. Hope this helps!.

Sparta and Athens

Spartan Soldiers
To become a Spartan soldier and citizen the Spartan men would have to endured pain and hardship!. When Spartan men were seven years old they were taken from their parents!. Spartan boys were often beaten by older children who would start fights to help make them tougher and strong!. They were given little food to eat, to survive they were forced to steal food!. If they were caught stealing they were beaten for being caught!. To avoid pain they learned how to be cunning, lie, cheat, and steal with out being caught!. Some were members, of what today we might call the CIA or FBI!. These men spied on slaves, and some enjoyed spying on the slaves!. If they found a slave who was showing leader ship skills they had orders to kill them immediately!. Spartan soldiers were superior to many of the people of Sparta!. The Spartan soldiers were fierce, capable, and proud of their strength!. For Spartan soldiers the highest honor was to die defending his country!.

Spartan Women
The women’s role in Sparta was not limited to marriage!. Spartan women had many rights that other women in Greece did not have!. Spartan women could own and control their own land!. They were also aloud to take another husband if their first had been away at war to long!. During war the women of Sparta were expected to take control of her husbands land and guard it against invaders until their husband returned!.

Spartan Children
In Sparta if a child was unhealthy or would not make a good soldier were left in the mountains to die!. From the age of seven to eighteen the healthy boys went through a severe training course!. Spartan boys were sent to military school at age six to seven!. At school the boys were taught survival skills and skills that were necessary to be a great Spartan soldier!. Often the school courses were very hard and painful!. Reading and writing though taught were not considered important skills to the ancient Spartans!. Only warfare mattered to the ancient Spartans!. The boys were not fed well, and were often told that it was fine to steal food as long as they were not caught stealing the food!. If the boys were caught then they were beaten for getting caught!. When they were eighteen Spartan boys became military cadets and learned the arts of war!. When they were twenty they had to join the military in which they served until they were sixty!.
In Spartan girls also attended school from the age of six to seven!. Spartan girls lived, slept, and trained!. Spartan girls were taught wrestling, gymnastics, and combat skills!. At the age of eighteen if a Sparta girl passed her skills and fitness test she was assigned a husband and allowed to return home!. If she failed the test she would lose her rights as a citizen, and became a member of the middle class!. In Sparta citizen women were aloud to move free and enjoy a great deal of freedom!.

Spartan Men
All Spartan men worked in the military from the age of twenty until the age of sixty!. The life of a Spartan male was a discipline, self-denial, and simplicity life!. The men of Sparta were seen as the highest no matter what class they were!. Men lived and died to protect the sate!. Men were given land to live on once they were thirty!. When a man was thirty he was considered an equal and was allowed to go and live with his family!.

Spartan Slaves
Spartan slaves were called Helots!. Helots descended from people who resisted subjugation by Sparta and those people who were rebelling all the time!. Helots were treated as slaves and were given half of the produce to the Spartan citizens!. If a slave was found showing leadership skills they were ordered to be killed immediately!. Some slaves were Messenians who had been captured were turned into slaves!. Helots worked mainly on small plots of land and on estates that were owned by Spartans!. Part of what was produced went to the master of the estate while the rest went to the helot farmer and his family!. A helot’s life was a miserable one!. Labor was long and also hard and helots always lived right on the border!.

Athenian Soldiers
The soldiers of Athens were required to serve only two years in the military!. One year as a garrison and one year in a border fort!. Once they had finished their first year as a solider they were given a sword and a shield!. The Athens military is like our military in at least one way they could be called at any moment until the age of sixty!. The Athens army was made up mainly of horsemen, and foot soldiers!. The soldiers were armed with a variety of weapons swords, shields, and lances!. When Athenian soldiers were eighteen they attended military school for two addition years!.

Athenian Women
The Athens women were not as important as the Sparta women!. The women of Athens stayed at home!. The women had no participation in sports or politics!. The wives of Athenian men were considered their Www@QuestionHome@Com

Never very good!. The Spartans were on a war footing all the time, because of their need to keep the "helots!?" under control as the ruling class was outnumbered!. The Athenians saw the Spartans as brutish and the Spartans saw the Athenians as effete!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
