Question: I have a question about trading in Byzantine empire!?
Hi, I'm doing a homework about the Byzantine empire and all of that stuff and there's one question that asks which were the trading products that came from Asia to Europe more or less during that ages!. I know one was silk, but could someone please tell me more!? Oh, if you got your sources from a book, website or something please cite it if you want!.

thanks so much!

The spices noted above are very important - Remember, no refrigration in those days, so spices were the only way to preserve meat!. So pepper, for example, was as valuable as some precious metals!.

Note also that two Byzantine monks travelling to Asia happened to (very difficult, risked their lives) smuggle some silkworms out of the continent; ending Asia's silk monopoly!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Dead right about silk! It came from China (or what would become China) over the Silk Road!.

There was also a Spice Road that ran from India to the Byzantine empire, and that transported a large range of exotic spices as well as jewels!.

Cotton came from the middle east (Egypt, etc) to Byzantium!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
