Question: Who were the Jacobites, and what were they fighting over!?
history on the Jacobites of Scotland!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
They were a Catholic political faction that supported the Stewart claim to the throne of Great Britain (England and Scotland)!.
They got very little support from either England or Scotland and there were a series of rebellions against the British Monarchy, the Highland Scots being the main troops in each and they were defeated each time!.
The last time was in 1745 and the British government banned Highland culture as a result of it!. The only place it was legal to play the pipes or wear a kilt was in one of the British Army Scottish regiments of which there were several!.

So basically it was a fight over which family got to sit on the British throne!.

This a really long and complicated answer!. You can go directly to the history of Scotland Webpage but its a long and convuluted versions!. The more simplistic version is here at www!.jacobite!.ca

The jacobites followed the decendants of James VII!. Bonnie Prince Charlie is probably the most famous an the most disastorous!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

They are a political group who are in favor to restore the Stuarts and their closest heirs by primogeniture laws to the British throne!. Jacobite comes from the Latin for of James which is Jacobus--James II was the king they initially wanted to be restored!. The Catholic king, James II of England was supplanted by her Protestant daughter Mary when a prince was born in 1688 (Glorious Revolution)!. The son would be raised Catholic and the English felt that a Catholic succession would be backwards instead of progressive (think Bloody Mary)!. The English also passed the Act of Settlement 1701 which barred any Catholic, or those who marry a Catholic, from inheriting the throne!. also in the act, only the Protestant descendants of Sophia of Hanover (nearest Protestant relative of Anne of Great Britain) could inherit the throne, ignoring the fact that there were 50 or so Catholics who were closer in relation to the Queen and therefore had more legitimate and stronger claims in normal primogeniture laws!.

The Jacobites believed that the interference of Parliament on the succession is deemed illegitimate and many Catholics supported them because it would bring end to discriminatory laws that barred them of many things in Protestant England!.

The list of heirs and kings that are recognized by the Jacobites could be found in this site: http://jacobite!.ca/kings/index!.htmWww@QuestionHome@Com
