Question: What did Davy Crockett wear on his head!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
A Coonskin HatWww@QuestionHome@Com

He wore a floppy felt hat when on normal business about town or in the country!. He wore a hard felt hat (top hat) for formal functions in Congress, although in the 1830s this style had not evolved to the silk hat style of the Civil War period!.

There is only one mention of his wearing a hat made from the pelt of a raccoon, complete with tail, and no one believed it at the time!. However, since then, actors and poets have referred to the raccoon hat as if were his brand!.

Incidentally, he was known as David Crockett in his lifetime; not Davy!. He was a very proper 19th century gentleman and would have been highly offended by such a familiarity!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

He wore a normal felt hat of the time for casual/work/"everyday" wear!. The "coonskin" or other fur hat was a winter item!. There is one source that suggests that he wore the coonskin hat more often after actors on stage started portraying him with it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
