Almost every country had a part to play in World War II!. There are only several exceptions and none of them are in South America!. Granted, South America was easily the least affected continent!.

Every country in South America joined the Allies by declaring war on the Axis Powers!. But most of them remained neutral until the last few months of the war!. Despite this many South American countries actually had Axis-sympathetic dictatorships!. Peru's government actually considered joining the Axis up until 1942, and when the war ended a handful of prominent Nazis fled to Argentina!.

Brazil was the only country in South America to mobilize its armed forces for war, fighting against Nazi Germany in the Atlantic Ocean and in Italy!. About 2,000 Brazilians were killed!. The Peruvian Navy did patrol the Panama Canal but never saw combat!. Thousands of South American volunteers fought in the British, French, and other Alllied militaries!.

Other South American nations contributed to the Allied war effort by allowing the U!.S!. to use their military bases, supplying vital war materials such as oil, rubber, and tin to the Allies, and sending food and carbon for heating to aid European families in need!.

The Battle of the River Plate in 1939 was fought in Uruguayan waters and the German battleship "Admiral Graf Spee" surrendered in Montevideo Harbor!. There are war cemetaries for the British and German dead in Montevideo!. also, 1,000 German sailors from the battleship were interned as POWs in Argentina for the entire war!.

Venezuela, with help from the U!.S!., heavily defended its oil wells due to very real fears that Germany would try to seize them!.

Brazil committed some troops in Italy, against Germany!. Suriname, Guyana, and French Guiana were all colonies ruled by the Governments in exile(except Britain)!.
