False!. Although Spain was the leading colonial Empire in the 1600's, it was left foundering after it's naval fleet was destroyed by Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar (1805)!. The British Empire, on the other hand, although slow to start rapidly overtook all others until it encompassed a quarter of the worlds land mass and pretty much control of the majority of it's oceans; it remains the largest Empire to have ever existed!. The Spanish wealth mainly came from it's pillaging of conquests which only had a finite amount to them whereas the British re invested in their colonies to turn them into a continuous cash-cow!. The Spanish Empire came to an end in the 19th century as opposed to the British that lasted up until the middle of the 20th!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Since you specified "in the New World", I would say true!. The Spanish Empire started in 1492 and ended with the Spanish American War!. The English started with Jamestown and (depending on who you ask) ended with Canada becoming a sovereign country!. Although England did get a lot from Canada (and the 13 colonies before our independence), they didn't get the $ amount anywhere near what the Spanish did, IN THE NEW WORLD!. As for size, again it depends on how you measure the size of the different areas!. Mexico, Central America and South America are larger than Canada and the Eastern part of what is now the continental U!.S!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

False!. It may have been richer due to the south american gold, but it was not larger than the English empire!. At least if you compare each at their peak!. I'm not sure which lasted longer, it's likely the Spanish lasted slightly longer since they had a head start and both had some manner of empire into the twentieth century!. But the Spanish empire was not all of those things, so the answer is still false!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Larger, yes, richer, yes, if you mean 'the English (more properly British) empire in the New World!.
But longer lasting!? Canada was only independent in 1867, and Guyana and Belize in living memory!. Of course, Americans like to think theirs is the only country that matters!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
