Lincoln's response to Horace Greeley's Tribune editorial is a classic of American Civil War documentation!. He makes it clear in this letter that he (Lincoln) understood his chief responsibility as President of the U!.S!. was to preserve the Union at any cost, hence: The Emancipation Proclamation!.
