For the U!.S!. Constitution to take effect, it had to be ratified by nine of the thirteen states!. New Hampshire was the ninth state on June 21, 1788, but the government didn't officially start operating under the Constitution until March 4, 1789!. Rhode Island was the last state to sign it on May 29, 1790!.
In order the first eight were : Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, and South Carolina!.

~The Constitution was not "ratified"!. It was acceded to by the member nations who joined the confederation it created!. They were very clear in that and it wasn't semantics!. As to the order in which they acceded, check your state quarter book!. Incidentally, no state acceded or ratified or joined!. Read the Preamble!. The people of those states did it!. Morris said "We the People" for a reason!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
