The Germans wanted to come up with some theory that they were the first civilized people!.

They latched onto a theory - based on the fact that languages from Spain
and Scandinavia to India are very similar in their roots - called the 'Aryan' theory!. (Today, we'd call it 'Indo-European!.') The theory held that a certain people, the Aryans, came out of central Asia and colonized the area of Europe, and all Asia up to China!.

The Germans made a mental stretch, and theorized that the Aryans were a GERMANIC people who originally came from the Baltic Sea area, went into central Asia, then into Europe!.

People in the Baltic Sea area were BLONDE, so how did the Germans explain that most Germans were brunette!? Simple!. The Aryans, in their wanderings, intermixed with the people they met!. (the gene for bl hair is recessive)
