Leonardo da Vince is the quintessential Rennaissance artist because he was so multi-faceted!. He excelled in various fields , such as sculpture!. painting, drawing, architecture, and enginneering!. He possessed an unbounded curiosity!. To him sight was the primary sense!. Long before empirical methods were used Leonardo applied them through attentive observation of nature and humans!. He is known as "uomo universal" because of the acuity of his mind and the range of his interests!. He excelled in everything that he did; however, because of his infinite curiousity, he did not always finish his works!.

In the painting of "St Jerome" his knowledge of human anatomy is obvious!. He is able to paint the emaciated body of "St Jerome" in a realistic and sober manner!. He is combining art with science - most definetely;gesture and look give "St Jerome" an expression of transfigured sorrow!.

The "Last Supper" is one of the most
famous paintings in the world!. In its monumental simplicity!. the composition of the scene is masterful; the power of the effect comes from the striking contrast in the attitudes of the young disciples as counterposed to Christ!. Leonardo did not choose the portrayal of the traitor Judas customary in the iconographic tradition; he portrayed ,rather, that moment of highest tension as related in the New Testament,"One of you that eateth with me will betray me!." All of the Apostles who were surprised by Christ's accusation seem to be agitated, while Christ aware of his his divine mission remains serene!. Only Judas shares this secret knowledge, and it shows!.
In the profound conception of his theme with the seemingly simple arrangement of the individuals, in the temperaments of the Apostles highlighted by gesture and mimicry, in the drama and the sublimity of the treatment, Leonardo attained the height of expression that has remained a model of its kind!. Many subsquent famous painters such as Rubens and Rembrandt were influenced by Leonardo!.
In this painting Leonardo caught the psychological state of the apostles perfectly!.

In summary Leonardo was a genius, years ahead of his contemporaries!. Did you know that he invented the parachute and the war-tank!. If you have a chance get a book of his anatomical drawings!. You will be amazed at their accuracy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
