Winston Churchill was a non issue until the Norway debacle!. Up till that point he was just a leading anti appeaser in the House of Commons!. He didnt have much to do with the lead up to WWII because of that!. He certainly had no power that any world leader would have respected at the time!.

Stalin allied with Germany with the Russo-German non aggression pact!. One secret part of that pact was that Poland would be split between Russia & Germany, that of course is what happened!. It had the effect of moving Russia's frontier 100 miles give or take into Poland!. Hitler was very afraid of the allies, and he would have rather kept Russia out of Poland!. The only reason he did it was the fear of what the Allies would do!. Most historians agree that Hitler would not have invaded Poland, and started the war if Russia had not agreed to the pact!. Hitler believed that it was crucial that Poland be gobbled up in one gulp, before the Allies had a chance to react!. With Russia invading from one side, and Germany from the other this was as close to certain as Hitler could get!. By the way, that extra 100 miles of Polish territory that Russia got may have enabled her to defeat Germany in the end!. If you figure that in the drive on Moscow the Germans came within 18 miles, the value of that 100 miles of cushion becomes obvious!. It may be then, that the deal that helped Hitler start the war, lost it for him!.

Chamberlain gets a bum rap for Munich!. Yes he did appease Hitler (and Mussolini) but everyone forgets the complex reasons why he did so!. Chamberlain was told repeatedly by his military chiefs that he had to buy time for Britain to rearm!. They told him that Britain could not fight in the condition that she was in!. One of the main faults that Chamberlain did have without a doubt was his ignorance of Hitler, and how far Hitler would go to establish Germany as the dominating power in Europe!. He also trusted Hitler, and that was a bad move!. He believed Hitlers lies about only wanting to return to the Reich those Germans who lived outside of it through the drawing of treaties ect!. By the time Chamberlain woke up (when Hitler took over the rump of Czechoslavakia), it was too late, and he knew it!. So, the Prime Minister takes the rap for Munich!. The funny thing about Munich was that Britain had no reason to get involved, she was not allied to any of the central powers!. Chamberlain got himself (and his country) involved on his own,and paid a high price for it!. Another mistake that Chamberlain made was not to trust the German generals!. The German Chief of Staff Wilhelm Adam, and the commander & chief of the Wermacht tried without success to convice Hitler that Germany could not survive an attack on the Czechs!. When they failed, other generals (including Halder) began plotting a coup!. They told the British that they planned to do it,and sent Dr!. Erich Kordt who was working at the time under von Ribbentrop himself to London!. All the generals asked was that when Hitler made his demands that Britain & France stand firm, and they would do the rest!. Instead Chamberlain caved, and asked Hitler for a conference at Munich!.

Hitler was a master politician!. Say what you will about him (most of it's true) but he did what no other man at the time could have done, and many did try!. That is, he mastered the German political scene!. This was not all done by force!. His ambition led the German people into the war, and the fact is that he came very near to winning it!. If Russia had fallen, there is no doubt that he could have held fortress Europe, and he came within a few miles of doing it!. His role in starting the war is obvious!. He added country after country to Germany, using propaganda and threats to keep the allies in line while he did so!. His mistake was thinking that if Britain would not go to war over the Czechs, they would not do so for Poland!.

Franco's main role was keeping Mussolini busy in Spain!. Mussolini had over the years kept Austria under his wing so to speak!. This was not because Italy cared about the Austrians!. It was because the fat dictator did not want Germany, or any other strong power at the northern end of the Alpine passes where Italy could be easily invaded!. So, Hitler actually worked both sides of the fence!. On the surface he supported Franco and the Nationalists!. Behind the scenes he was giving help to the Republicans!. The purpose was to keep the Spanish Civil War going so he could keep Mussolini busy while he took over Austria, the anschluss of early 1938!. Franco also gave the Germans the chance to develop the miltary doctrines and equipment that they would use in the war by allowing them to send "volunteers" to fight in Spain!. The "volunteers" somehow managed to volunteer with the tanks and aircraft that they would need!. The Luftwaffe perfected the art of bombing by destroying undefended towns like Guernica!. As long as the supplies kept coming in, Franco gave Hitler and the German generals a free hand!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

"General Francisco Bahamonde Franco was not the most popular leader in Spain during the early 1930s!. He was hardly charismatic; Hitler once described meeting him as "less pleasurable than four or five teeth pulled!." But Franco, a staunch conservative, was infuriated when a Republican alliance of socialists, Marxists, and liberals won Spain's first free elections in 1936!. So the General decided to "restore order" by force!.

Franco's Nationalists were losing the civil war, but military support from Hitler, Mussolini, and the U!.S!. corporations (Ford, General Motors, DuPont, Standard Oil, Studebaker, Chase National Bank) that backed Hitler turned the tide in his favor!. The U!.S!. claimed neutrality but did nothing to stop these companies from aiding Franco!. The failure of the U!.S!. and the other democratic nations to assist Spain's democratic government was ultimately responsible for Franco's victory in 1939!.!.!."
