The American Civil War!. Right now I'm really interested in spying during the Civil War and all that entails!. Which includes codes, sabotage, theft, intelligence, and counter-intelligence!. One thing I've learned is how newspaper boys, the boys who delivered the paper to the army camps, were among some of the best choices for spies because no one typically even considered they could be spying!.

Another thing was a black couple who were some of the best scouts (which from what I've seen so far seems to have been used as much for army spies as actual army scouts) in Hooker's army prior to Chancellorsville!. The husband served as a cook on Hooker's side of the Rappahannock and his wife was a maid in a woman's house on the other side!. Apparently the woman whom the wife worked for must have had close contact with Lee's Army because the wife was able to get accurate info on what was happening in the Army of Northern Virginia!. As in who was going where, when Lee was trying to decieve by making it look like the army was about to move, etc!. The couple had set up a signalling system where by she'd place certain articles of clothes, blankets, etc!. on a clothesline, obstensibly to dry!. But in reality the placement on the clothesline and her moving things about sent him a message as to what was happening in Lee's army and he could then take this to Hooker!. Their system was surprisingly accurate while it was in place, and while the wife could get the info!.

Now if you ask the question what I think of when asked Nazi spy, I think a Nazi spy, not an Allied spy!. I more associate a very particular type of spy with the a specific group they work for, not folks who spy on that group!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

good question on how we perceive things - if you say nazi spy to me, I perceive it as he is spying for,,,,,,,,,the Nazis!.

To me what comes to mind is both,,,,,,,the words and an image of Patrick Henry the American spy (perceived by me he was An American working for American victory, cause) shouting "Give me liberty, or give me death"!.

German spies,,,,,, the most intrigueing to me the seductress Mata Hari, who made love to French Generals, and turned the info over to Germany!. Alas, she was found out, and executed by the French nearing the end of WW1!.

A great story, just waiting for a modern version, now most people live in L!.A!. always talking about a screenplay they are working on,,,,,,,, and never have one!. At least this will make them look good, if they mention they are working on a Mata Hari screenplay,,,,,,,,at the bar!.

P!.S!. the American pilot shot down over Russia, and tried as a spy, and convicted, fueling already bad relations during the cold war, was Francis Gary Powers!. Yes, flying a plane, at an altitude almost in outer space and taking pictures of another nations war infrastructure is spying!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
