"Any country whose people conduct themselves well can count upon our hearty friendship," he said!. "Chronic wrongdoing, however, !. !. !. may force the United States to exercise an international police power!." Teddy didn't hesitate to use this "police power" to strengthen his country, but he was always careful not to upset the balance of world powerWww@QuestionHome@Com

Your thesis SEEMS self-evidently true!.

Larger nations competed with smaller ones, using military force!. The larger nations invariably, through their greater strength, would overwhelm the colonies of the smaller, less powerful countries!. Cases to prove this would be the short-lived Portuguese colonies in India (except for Goa island, lasted till 1970s), and Macoa, China; Dutch colonies in New York state!.

But then, you'd have to explain how Portugal amassed such a large overseas empire - Brazil, Angola, Mozambique; and the Netherlands held the Dutch East Indies (modern Indonesia), and several Carribean islands - impt!., because they were big money-makers for Holland when they were taken over!.

In short, for your essay, you'd have to explain how these smaller countries (Portugal, Holland) set up big colonial empires, despite their small population!. (Remember that to prove a point, you have to not only argue for it, but knock down the obvious - and here, very great - exceptions to what you have to prove!.)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Depends on the colonizer!.

The Belgians were horrible in the congo!. The Spanish were pretty harsh!. The Germans were genocidal on occasion!. The French were pretty good!. Most of the British colonies actually benefited, though it is not politically correct to say so!. The big factor was how long the British were in control!. The longer they were there, the longer time they had to plant the seeds of liberal institutions, like honest law courts, functional economies, etc!. Many of the British Colonies in Africa became much POORER after ther British left in relative terms, and some in absolute terms!. (Look at Zimbabwe as an example!.)

Go to the LIBRARY and request the BOOK "Empire: The Rise and Demise of the British World Order" by Niall Ferguson!. If they don't have interlibrary loan can get it for you!. The last few chapters are packed with statistics regarding just your question!.

P!.S!. If you want to be intelectually HONEST it is always better to look at the facts of a situation before deciding how you are going to write a piece!. If you have already decided what you are going to argue before you look at the facts, then you aren't honest!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Focus your concentration on the Railway race in Africa between Great Brittan, Germany, Dutch, and even the French!. It was very competitive to say the least because the "New World" question had already been decided and each nation was afraid of missing out of any spoils the continent of Africa might yield!.
